SHOWING FILM: Box Office, Distribution, and Cinematic Display

Although moving images seem now to circulate right into our lines of sight instantaneously or are promoted to us as experiences that we can call up "on demand," it takes an enormous amount of work to get a film out in front of an audience. In this course, we explore the historical and technological side of the film exhibition equation, focusing on the cultural institutions and commercial venues that have become the foundation of film circulation. As part of this course, students will learn the history of film exhibition and distribution, visit with programmers and curators of festivals and programs, become familiar with the role of distributors, particularly those serving specialized markets, and study some of the technical aspects of film preservation and restoration, increasingly a job that requires knowledge of highly computerized, software-dependent skills.
