Rachel Torrey

Museum Curator
Biography:
Shortly after graduating from Film & Digital Media in 2000 Torrey accepted an internship at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History (MAH). As collections intern, she assisted the registrar with the research and documentation of antique clothing in the museum’s extensive history collection. She also assisted the history and fashion exhibitions by digging through box after dusty box of gorgeous Victorian clothing and accessories. Torrey then continued to work in the Photography department at SFMOMA where she assisted the senior curator of photography and coordinated the online Foto Forum. San Francisco is also an excellent place to pursue her own curatorial, art and writing projects. Torrey currently finds herself as an consulting curator, working with bay area organizations such as the San Francisco Museum & Historical Society, and the NPS Presidio Program. Torrey says, “My museum career may be a bit non-traditional for a film major, but I feel that my education in fine arts has allowed me to apply my knowledge and experience to a wide array of opportunities. I focused by studies on film theory and criticism and I think it really transformed me as a writer.”
