Mobilizing Workshop: Apps for Artists, Apps by Artists

Mon, Oct 21, 2013, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
Location:
DARC 151

Special Digital Media Workshop with Dominique Cunin.

Abstract: In 2008, to explore the artistic potential of mobile screens, we designed Mobilizing, a programming language for artists and art students.  Mobilizing can be used to quickly prototype interactive visual and audio apps for iOS devices.  It makes it easy to read sensor values from mobile devices as well as to integrate pictures, animations, text, video, and sound.  This workshop will introduce Mobilizing to participants and feature examples of Mobilizing projects that demonstrate its capabilities for interactive creation and design.

Presenter: Dominique Cunin is a doctoral student in Aesthetics, Science and Technology at the University of Paris 8 and also a researcher at one of the leading art and design schools in France, the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris (ENSAD).  He holds a master’s degree in Digital Arts Research from the École Européenne Supérieure de l’Image de Poitiers-Angoulême, Université de Poitiers, France; and, an undergraduate degree in art (DNAP) from the École Nationale Supérieure d’Art de Nancy, France.

He is in Northern California the week of October 21st to present his work at several venues hosting the “Futures of the Book” (http://www.futuresofthebook.com/). “Futures of the Book” is a week of discussions about the future of reading and writing in the digital age. It is organized as a partnership between the Berkeley Center for New Media, the Books in Browsers conference, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States, the Goethe Institute, and swissnex San Francisco.

Dominique’s visit to UC Santa Cruz is co-sponsored by the Film & Digital Media Department and the Digital Arts & New Media Program.
