John Greyson: "Bent Roulette: Global Solidarity, Pinkwashing, and the Digital Avant-Garde"

When: Tuesday, November 13
Time: 5:15pm
Location: Communications 150 (Studio C)

Introcution by B. Ruby Rich, Department of Film & Digital Media

When gay rights are increasingly deployed as a punitive bechmark of neo-liberal modernity, queer activists must rethink what it means to perform acts of global solidarity.  John Greyson will present three recent short works (Covered, 14.3 Seconds, Green Laser) which use unlikely pop culture samples to address recent gay rights struggles in Sarajevo, Baghdad and Gaza, and discuss the lures and limits of such digital engagement.

John Greyson is a Toronto video artist/filmmaker whose features, shorts and installations include Fig Trees (Best Documentary Teddy, Berlin Film Festival, 2009), Proteus (Diversity Award, Barcelona Gay Lesbian Film Festival, 2004), Lilies (Best Film Genie, 1996), Zero Patience (Best Canadian Film, Sudbury Film Festival, 1993), The Making of Monsters (Best Canadian Short, Toronto Film Festival, 1991), and Urinal (Best Feature Teddy, Berlin Film Festival, 1988).  As associate professor in Film at York University, he wa awarded the 2007 Bell Canada Award in Video Art.
