Brett Kashmere is a Canadian-born, Oakland-based filmmaker, curator, and educator. Using sports as a tool for engaging audiences in a conversation about collective memory, popular culture, the archive, and obscured histories, Kashmere’s documentary essays combine traditional archival research with materialist aesthetics, hybrid forms, and explorations of voice. His work has been addressed in publications such as ESPN’s Grantland, The Globe and Mail, The Cinema of Hockey, Sports Illustrated’s Hardwood Paroxysm, and Cinema Scope; has been supported by The Heinz Endowments, The Pittsburgh Foundation, the Carol R. Brown Awards, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the National Film Board of Canada; and has screened internationally at the BFI London Film Festival, Milano Film Festival, Kassel Dokfest, Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival, UnionDocs, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, British Film Institute, Ann Arbor Film Festival, Conversations at the Edge, Images Festival, Cinematheque Quebecoise, and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Kashmere is also the founding editor of INCITE Journal of Experimental Media. He has taught media production at Concordia University, Oberlin College, and the University of California, Santa Cruz.
