The Neighborhood

THE NEIGHBORHOOD documents the residents of Oak Park and their communal reaction to gentrification, and situates this response in the racialized context of Oak Park’s particular history with residential segregation. Through the eyes of a new landlord, the president of the local neighborhood association, and a sociologist who grew up in the community the film explores how gentrification is linked to historically segregated communities like Oak Park. Whether remodeling an investment property, mapping census tracts, or organizing community-led solutions, the film documents how segregation is a contemporary and persistent experience that is more than a de facto natural occurrence of a free market, and what, if any, individual action may be taken to engage it.
