Description: 
This course will focus on different cinematic approaches to a single historical event (the conquest of the Americas) and will be structured around variations of the genre (the war film, the epic film, the biographical film, the metahistorical film, the topical historical film). Audiovisual works will include Down of America (dir., Juan Orduna, 1952, Spain), Aguirre, the Wrath of God (dir., Werner Herzog, Germany, 1977), 1492: Conquest of Paradise (dir., Ridley Scott, UK, 1992), and Even the Rain (dir., Iciar Bollain, Spain, 2010) among others.
