What does it mean to form an ethics of digital media use? How does "fake news" relate to a history of disinformation and propaganda? How has the internet been used to mobilize campaigns of social justice and social oppression in different contexts? What does activism look like in the digital era? We will approach these questions through studying history, theory, journalism and documentaries while examining a variety of topics including: political memes, pseudo-realities, guerilla movements, citizen journalism, social media, surveillance, an open source investigations. By considering our interaction with media as a form of digital citizenship, this course aims to center the viewer, or reader and producer of media, at the nexus of the public sphere and explore the revolutionary potential therein.
