In this seminar, we will undertake an extended examination of different concepts of the electronic moving image screen in film and media theory and in popular culture. We will look at various ways that electronic screens—from CRT and LED television monitors to computers and cell phone touch screens and beyond—facilitate particular ways of imagining, interacting with, and redefining the moving (and/or illuminated, projected, portable, interactive, etc.) image. Course materials and seminar discussions will address critical strategies for understanding these screens as distinct media and material objects as well as points of translation or remediation between different forms and technologies of representation, communication, vision, and experience.
